Exhibition: My Sisters and other Ghosts — August 17, 2015

Please join Jasmin Stephens for the opening of My Sisters and other Ghosts – Genevieve Chua, Imhathai Suwatthanasilp and Bussaraporn Thongchai – on Saturday 29 August at 3pm at The Cross Art Projects, Sydney.
Sydney-based Phaptawan Suwannakudt, writer Denise Thwaites and Jasmin will introduce the exhibition on behalf of the artists.

My Sisters and other Ghosts presents new and recent works by Genevieve Chua, Imhathai Suwatthanasilp and Bussarporn Thongchai who live in Singapore and Bangkok. With a focus on drawing, the exhibition makes connections between the presence of the supernatural in Southeast Asia and the politics of these artists. In Southeast Asia a number of prominent mythologies feature female ghosts who cause trouble. In this exhibition, figures such as the Krasue and the Pontianak, arguably inspire these artists in their consideration of the nature of self and belonging. Chua, Suwatthanasilp and Thongchai are early career artists who share an interest in modes of disclosure and the complexities surrounding what is public and what is private.
